I recently finished making my first narrative short film and about half of it includes mixed media animation! I learnt a lot during the process and thought I’d share the workflow I found to be useful and encourage you to give it a go yourself. It’s such a tactile, expressive and playful way to create some cool visuals 💫
The whole process involves firstly converting video into a series of still frames, then printing those frames, hand-editing them with craft tools, and finally scanning the pages to be able to then play back the individually embellished frames as video again.
Here’s a step-by-step video guide on the process – hope it helps!
I’m very excited that I managed to complete my short film within my intended timeframe and you can see how some of the mixed media animation turned out in the above tutorial video. Keen to share the full film with you in due time!
